By the end of this week, the lease transfer on my M235i will be complete. It is sad to see it go, but that also means I need to start working on finding a replacement vehicle. My dealership has decided to keep me on to work in the summer, and my living situation at school this upcoming year will require a car, so I am now poised to purchase something new. I am choosing between 2011 335i Xdrive Coupes with around 50k miles, and this S4. I’ve owned a 335i Xdrive coupe in the past (along with 4 other BMW’s), so I know what they are about. I’ve never driven an S4 though. This one seems to be priced reasonably, and has all the mods I would want on it. It is even has two years of CPO warranty left on it, but would have to be flashed back to stock before being brought in for service. Tell me if it looks like a good buy.

Might just be my prejudice, but I’d never buy a car that had been modified like that because it usually indicates that it’s also been thrashed. Well, either that, or it was owned by the kind of complete idiot who’d put loads of money into mods they didn’t need/use, in which case there’s a good chance the idiot drove it like an idiot in some way.

Other than that, my experience is that enthusiast forums are great places to sell, terrible ones to buy: the prices are usually at a definite premium because of the echochamber effect when dealing with people who all like the cars to start with.

Of course YMMV and this might be the exception that tests the rule.

Agreed. Moreover, most mods lower the value of a car at a sale. These guys seem to believe the opposite.

After having killed a bunch of today working on my cousin’s S4... buy the BMW if it is manual.

I guessed that might be the case, but I don’t know what the right price for one of those Audis is to start with.

This one happens to be priced well below other cars being sold by dealers. Of course, the modifications make it harder to sell, which is probably the reason he is priced accordingly.

What year S4/what was wrong with it. This car happens to be warrantied for two years. Both cars are manual, and I happen to like the BMW too, but it would not have a warranty and I would like to try something different.

Modified B5 S4 (2000). Every single window regulator broke at once and that lead to further electrical issues afterwards. I imagine newer Audis are more reliable and a warranty is a useful thing to have.

The 3.0t, thats the better motor to have, very hardy, plus with the VAG Com you will be able to do your own diagnostics. (I own one, beyond handy) I would say that’s they way to go, also it’ll have a far better resale value than the BMW after depreciation. Also the AWD is supperior in the Audi.

Oh, non model specific audi parts are far cheaper, that 3.0t comes in A6s, Q5s and Q7s. I would just make sure that it has had all the recall services done.

LOL B5s are a life test. They’re a blast when they’re working but a shit ton of labor when they’re not. Ask me how I know...

Yeah. My cousin was regretting rolling the windows down (where they promptly stuck) and some of his life choices today but we got them all fixed and I reminded him he has 2x my horsepower in a similar weight car. I didn’t have anything that cool in my mid 20s.

I recently got an E92 335i but you already know about them. I love B8 S4's and S5's, I've heard they are plenty fun to drive with a manual and the optional sport diff. Look for a model with that and I bet it'll be good.

The sport diff is the hardest thing to find.. I’m defintiely going with a manual though.
